This table was found by the side of the road by a client driving away with her new purchase. She picked it up, turned around, and brought it back to me! It appeared as though someone had tried to restore it, then given up after a very thick, poorly applied coat of paint. The paint was mostly white, but the poor restoration job indicated it’d been sealed with oil based polyurethane, which caused some of the paint to yellow. The woman who found the piece actually liked the yellowish hue and aged look of the paint, so I chose Annie Sloan’s Old White paint. I sanded the entire piece down before painting, since the yellowish paint was peeling so much. I didn’t want the new paint to peel off when the old paint inevitably flaked off.
Sanding took a very long time, but it was definitely worth it. A few coats of paint later and the piece almost felt TOO nice, too new. I wanted to keep the old age feel, so even a small amount of distressing didn’t feel right. I went around again until it looked worn and authentic. Here are some pictures!
